Jacob is old enough to try oral feedings. He's tried a few times now to breastfeed. We've had some moderate success. It really depends on if he's awake or not. If he's awake he'll latch on and suck a couple of times and then kind of get bored and then fall asleep. If he's sleepy then we get nothing. I think the biggest obstacle for us to overcome is for him to actually open his mouth up wide enough to get the nipple into his mouth.
So after about a week of attempting to breastfeed the doctor asked me if it was okay for them to try to bottle feed him. I know some people would not be okay with having their baby take a bottle but I just want to see Jacob make progress and if he's successful bottle feeding that would be wonderful. So what do you know they tried breast feeding him last night at midnight and he took down the entire bottle in 18 minutes! We tried breastfeeding again today and he was just not latching on so we switched to the bottle and my little man took down the entire bottle in 15 minutes. I'm now convinced he's like his dad, they both want instant gratification, with the bottle the milk comes out right away, he doesn't want to work on it, also it's a lot easier to shove a bottle in his mouth than a nipple.
My baby did have a bad spell today where they had to bag him. He was doing so well, he hasn't had to be bagged in almost 2 weeks. He's still having spells but just little ones and most of them he can get out of himself. I know he'll grow out of them, but every time it seems like we are making progress he'll have a really bad spell. One day at a time, one achievement at a time.
